H1N1 Influenza

E-mail Print PDF

To CIMBA students:

Students have received a mail from the UI with the Influenza Information. Since the situation here at Paderno is a bit specific, we wanted to document some additional information.

As you are very likely aware, the novel H1N1 influenza is widespread throughout the world. Fortunately, the vast majority of cases are mild and, at this point, the novel H1N1 virus appears no more virulent or severe than most seasonal influenzas. For those reasons, you should think about this virus as yet another strain of influenza and take the same basic approach that helps protect all of us from any seasonal influenza outbreak.

That being said, CIMBA would like to inform you of some simple precautions that could protect you from this virus:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently--particularly after you sneeze--or use an alcohol-based hand gel: This is particularly important as it is the easiest way to protect yourself.
  • Avoid going out in public when you are ill: If you feel like you are getting sick, stay in your dorm room. If you walk around campus, you risk giving the virus to others. Contact the front office as soon as possible via email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or call the emergency phone (+39 3357851270). CIMBA will dispatch the campus nurse to your room to check on your symptoms and decide further steps if necessary.
  • Get vaccinated for influenza: Students have the opportunity to get vaccinated once they arrive in Paderno. If this is something you would be interested in, please let the CIMBA UG staff know as soon as possible.
  • Cover your mouth with the crook of your arm or your sleeve, not your hand, when you cough or sneeze: This minimizes the opportunity to transmit the disease by hand-contact.
  • Throw used tissues in the trash and do not share food, drink, or utensils: This will ensure that unnecessary transmissions do not occur.

If you feel ill, please refer to this list of influenza symptoms to see if you might have the virus:

  • Fever of 100 degrees F or higher
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Hedache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

In the event of a case of H1N1 influenza on campus, CIMBA has devised a complete action plan to minimize the spread of the disease and mitigate missed classes. You can view this policy here. Also, further information about the H1N1 influenza virus can be found at the Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm)

As always, if you have any questions or would like further clarification please feel free to contact the CIMBA office ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).
